Position Details
Location: Waterford, CT
Shift: 1st Shift
Job Summary
The Welder – Level 3 is responsible for interpreting complicated blueprints, creating jigs and techniques for fabrication, and performing high-quality MIG and TIG welding to AWS specifications, including AWS D1.1, D1.2, and D1.3. This role requires a great deal of skill, knowledge, and creativity to build intricate and challenging products for both military and industrial applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Welding and fabrication
- Conceptualize finished part from raw materials and blueprints.
- Develop process and create jigs.
- Perform MIG and TIG welding on structural steel, sheet steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
- Quality Control and Inspection
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work instructions to determine welding requirements.
- Visually inspect and measure parts to ensure all welds meet print and all features and dimensions are correct.
- Equipment Maintenance and Safety
- Set up, adjust, and maintain welding equipment and tooling.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, including wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Material Handling
- Safely handle and transport metal parts using carts, pallet jacks, and fork trucks, and cranes as needed.
- Stage finished parts for the next operation
- Mentoring less experienced welders
- Contribute ideas for process and product continuous improvement
- Other production work as required
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience: 5+ years of MIG and TIG welding experience using steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
- Certifications: AWS certification a plus, or skills and abilities to become AWS-certified.
- Technical Skills: Proven ability to weld and create jigs and processes to make complicated parts from scratch, parts that have never been made before.
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints, symbols, and notes related to welding and fabrication. Able to navigate computer system to find, manipulate, and understand CAD models.
- Attention to Detail: Exceptional ability to recognize design errors, to capture all details on blueprints, to question anything that looks out of place.
- Communication: Good skills to mentor and teach junior welders, work with Engineering to resolve problems, fluent in English.
Physical Requirements
The ability to perform the following physical demands is essential:
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, push, or pull metal parts weighing up to 50 lbs unassisted.
- Physical strength and stamina to handle heavy equipment and parts throughout the shift.
- Manual dexterity and excellent hand-eye coordination for precision work.
- Ability to work in a shop environment with potential exposure to noise, dust, and metal particles (with appropriate PPE).
